Causes of Scalp Eczema – Seborrheic Dermatitis

Among the young’s as well as the elderly scalp eczema is becoming a notorious and bothersome condition from which everyone wants to get rid of, Scalp eczema is also called Seborrhoeic Dermatitis. It is an inflammatory skin disease which involves many areas of the body, when affecting scalp called scalp eczema.
One of the most important causes of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is a fungus, a yeast named as Malassezia furfur. It is usually considered as a part of skin flora (that means they are normally present over the skin along with other microorganisms). But in Seborrhoeic Dermatitis there is over growth of the Malassezia furfur that leads to the inflammation of scalp. The exact cause of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is still unknown yet there are many theories about its causes. There are multiple factors which are thought to be causative factors of Scalp Eczema.
There are two other forms of the yeast. One is Malassezia globosa and other isMalassezia restricta. As a result of over growth of the yeast the body’s defense system activates and produces an immune response against the yeast which causes inflammation of scalp. Usually the patients having seborrhoeic dermatitis have low immunity towards the yeast.
There is a hypothesis regarding how Malassezia causes Seborrhoeic Dermatitis. According to this hypothesis the Malassezia acts on the sebum (the oily secretions of the skin from sebaceous glands at the sites where hair are present on skin) which then release two types of fatty acids, the saturated fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids. Malassezia utilizes the saturated fatty acids leaving the unsaturated fatty acids. These then passes thought the most outer layer of skin and causes damage to the skin as well as interfering with the protective function of the skin. The oleic acid from the sebum becomes the source of food for Malassezia leading to scaly scalp (the dandruff).
According to some theories after the yeast the other most important cause of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis is over production of sebum (the oily secretions of the skin from sebaceous glands at the sites where hair are present on the skin) as this condition involves the skin with excessive sebaceous glands. But other theories deny it.
There are many other minor causes and risk factors of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis. Some diet related factors are thought to be the cause of seborrhoeic dermatitis for example increase intake of vitamin A (a fat soluble vitamin) in children. Deficiency of several other vitamins like vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 (water soluble vitamins) and biotin also causes Seborrhoeic Dermatitis.
There are some conditions in which patients are prone to Seborrhoeic Dermatitis for example patients with low body immune defenses, some brain disorders like Parkinsonism and paralysis and infections like HIV/AIDS.
Scalp eczema is also caused by some allergens and irritants that produces allergic reaction when comes in contact with skin and scalp. Some irritants are hair products like dyes, soaps, lotions, hair washes and some other chemical agents used for different purposes on skin and scalp. The scalp eczema caused by allergens is called atopic dermatitis. It can occur in a patient with the absence of any above mentioned causes because some other allergic conditions run in the family like asthma, hay fever may affects the patient.
Human body has got lots of hormonal functions. Imbalance of the hormones causes scalp eczema. Some environmental and genetic factors also cause scalp eczema.
Following are the risk factors that enhance the scalp eczema,
Stress,
Lack of sleep,
Poor health,
Fatigue,
Too much oily or very dry skin,
Excessive sweating in cold weather people are affected more by scalp eczema as compared to warm weather. Some other skin diseases like psoriasis, Rosacea and acne also enhances the chance of developing scalp eczema.
